  8. WilmaΓÇÖs success on the track came after a 
  9. long struggle, not to run, but to walk. When 
  10. Wilma was 4 years old, she became sick
  11. with scarlet fever, double pneumonia, and
  12. polio. The polio affected her left leg, and
  13. Wilma couldnΓÇÖt walk. When she was 6,
  14. Wilma learned to walk with a brace on the
  15. leg. Her doctors feared that she might never
  16. be able to walk normally again. But WilmaΓÇÖs
  17. family massaged her leg frequently, and 
  18. by the time she was 11, Wilma was 
  19. walking normally.
