- At the 1960 Summer
- Olympic Games, Wilma
- Rudolph became the first
- United States woman
- ever to win three gold
- medals in track and field.
-
- WilmaΓÇÖs success on the track came after a
- long struggle, not to run, but to walk. When
- Wilma was 4 years old, she became sick
- with scarlet fever, double pneumonia, and
- polio. The polio affected her left leg, and
- Wilma couldnΓÇÖt walk. When she was 6,
- Wilma learned to walk with a brace on the
- leg. Her doctors feared that she might never
- be able to walk normally again. But WilmaΓÇÖs
- family massaged her leg frequently, and
- by the time she was 11, Wilma was
- walking normally.
